More on the OSA Leaders Weekend by Rusty Thomas

Caveat: Leaders from across the nation joined together this past weekend, February 4-7, 2010, to allow the theology of the church house to become biography in the streets of Charlotte and surrounding areas. It was an incredible blessing to have all these saints gathered in the Name of Jesus to make a difference in our city. When you read about where we went and what God did, you will surely be ready to join us at our National Event July 17-24, 2010. Enjoy!

Charlotte Turned Upside Down – No, Right Side Up

“And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also; Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.” Acts 17:6, 7.

In many ways, our gathering in NC for the Operation Rescue/Operation Save America leadership meeting was the most memorable. In fact, I dare say that it made OR/OSA history. It seemed that the Lord provided opportunity to fulfill the entire book of Jeremiah in four eventful days as the saints went to the diverse gates of Charlotte and surrounding cities in NC.

Day One

The Wall

“And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood. And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.” Revelation 12:15, 16.

Upon our arrival into NC, we were greeted with a devastating call from David Benham, Flip’s son. The plaza they built, to house their company and other businesses, was on the verge of collapse. Due to rain and other structural issues, the wall supporting the structure tumbled down, compromising the entire building. Mere minutes before it fell, Flip, David, Jason, and a couple of other men were under the wall examining its breach. God in His mercy spared their lives.

Needless to say, the Benham family was reeling. David, who rarely cries, was found weeping. The OSA saints gathered around the family to provide a spiritual and moral wall to support them in their hour of need. As time progressed and the damage assessed, the Lord through His people began to answer prayers and provide words of comfort and encouragement. Pastor Bill Dunfee, from Ohio, who endured a challenging trip to North Carolina to the point of almost turning back, prayed and declared, “It is finished” to David's concern and anxiety.

In God’s providence, Flip preached a message in Revelation chapter twelve. The only Scripture in that chapter he did not expound upon was Revelation 12:15-16. After we prayed for this dire situation these passages came alive. It was raining cats and dogs and the more it rained, the more likely the building would have been “carried away of the flood.” But God’s Word stated that the earth would help. Sure enough, as the engineers, construction workers, and inspectors were desperately trying to save the building, they found to their utter amazement that the earth directly under the building was not of the same quality of earth that compromised the wall. It was more compact, sturdy, and provided the necessary foundation to support the building.

During one of the many prayers to God to spare the building, Ante Pavkovic received this Word. “In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old: That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by my name, saith the Lord that doeth this (Amos 9:11, 12).”

Another word came forth that declared, “You have asked why and searched your hearts with tears, fear, and trembling. The question is not why for the answer is wide. Your foundation was not wide enough to sustain the growth and height, I have planned for you. It is the width that determines the height of the future and hope I have purposed for your lives, ministry, and business.” Praise God for being “a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1.

Day Two

The High Schools

Day two began early. Facing rain, wind, and cold, the saints began a day that made history in OR/OSA. We went to more gates and ministered in more venues on this day, than any other in the last 20 years.

Before the sun arose, we stationed ourselves at North Cabarrus High School. We set up with signs that revealed the stark contrast between life and death, blessing and cursing. Through the signs, we demonstrated that the wages of sin is death (abortion), but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23). The dead babies represented what our nation looks like when we violate God’s commandments. The live baby represents God’s blessing when we honor His commandments.

Though the weather was severe, we passed out hundreds of Christian/pro-life packets to the students.

We packed up and proceeded to go to another high school. By this time, the sun was coming up and we could actually see though the weather remained difficult. We once again set up and had a greater opportunity to engage the students who were receptive to the outreach. We passed out much more literature and actually had the added blessing to preach to the students, some of whom identified themselves as anarchists. They gladly took the materials and listened intently as God’s Word went forth in power and conviction.

The Hospital

From there, we packed up and went to downtown Charlotte and exposed the unfruitful works of darkness at the Presbyterian Hospital. This is a huge complex and, unbeknownst to many, this hospital employs two doctors who moonlight as abortionists. Last year, Flip confronted them and pleaded with them to stop killing babies. They promised they would stop and thus were not uncovered to the general public.

Unfortunately, they just stopped killing at one abortion mill and began applying their grisly trade at another. The saints, armed with flyers calling these “doctors” to repentance and to Christ, went to each floor of a ten story building and posted these flyers in the bathrooms, elevators, corridors, and offices. They went to each office to reveal the horrible truth about what these men were doing to our children.

Flip and I, however, went directly to the abortionist’s office. Of course, the “doctors” refused to meet with us. Flip challenged the receptionist and reminded her of the promise these doctors made a year ago. While he was rebuking them for reneging on their word and lying, we passed out the flyers to a room full of patients and preached. They were all informed that these doctors not only used their skills to birth babies, they kill them as well. Obviously, these things ought not to be. We went on to reveal to them that the root of abortion is racism. Both abortionists are black. They will probably remember this “doctor’s” visit for a long time to come.

The Mosque

The next gate we visited was the largest Mosque in Charlotte. In the freezing rain, we passed out over three hundred Gospel packets, which included the Gospel of John and Romans in Arabic and English, plus the Jesus film in Arabic. Ninety five percent of the Muslims received the materials with smiles on their faces. One Muslim refused the materials. Pastor Bill Shanks from New Orleans informed this individual, “There will be no virgins for you.” Only Pastor Bill can get away with something like this.

Our thanks go out to a very special Lebanese minister of the Gospel of Christ, who gave his heart to Christ at eleven years old, and has now devoted his life to winning Muslims to Christ. This pastor (name omitted) gave us a powerful sermon about how the Gospel of Christ can penetrate the Muslim heart and how God can use us to bring this good news to them. We hope to have him at our National Event, July 17-24, this summer!

Morning Star Ministries

This next gate was a difficult one for us. It was the gate of the Lord’s House. Our final excursion in Kingdom excellence that day brought us to Morning Star Ministries, led by pastor Rick Joyner. Supposedly, he was in charge of restoring a colorful man by the name of Todd Bentley. Mr. Bentley was a prominent figure in the “Lakeland Revivals.” Apparently, while enjoying much success in Lakeland, he fell into adultery, divorced his wife, left his three children, and married a new improved wife within a couple of months. Morning Star believes it was “premature,” but when a man as powerful as Mr. Bentley is concerned, why sweat the details.

When we all entered the building, the band was playing. They had interesting songs that stated, “Lose your heart, lose your head, and feel it now.” At minimum this song was infantile, and at worst - demonic. In the presence of approximately one thousand seekers of miracles, dreams, visions, angels, and supernatural manifestations, men of God with open Bibles stationed themselves to publicly confront Mr. Bentley with the love of God that is according to truth.

Unbeknownst to us, the Oprah Winfrey show had a film crew to record Todd Bentley's “restoration.” Plus, another film crew was working on a documentary chronicling the “Lakeland Revival” all the way to Mr. Bentley's reemergence with Morning Star. We also did not know that this particular service was being streamed to one hundred and forty nations.

With fear and trepidation, seven of us had a Scripture to call Todd Bentley and Morning Star Ministries to repentance. We became a public rebuke to a ministry that has trashed the marriage covenant God gave for the blessing of mankind and to raise Godly offspring. We came because the lambs of God are being led astray by false prophets who believe that one can discard his wife and children and find another wife and continue on in the ministry. Todd Bentley has become a poster child for the devil’s schemes and lies. Because God loves him and desires Todd to return to the truth of the Scripture, we were sent.

We came to remind this church that all Christians should love the presence of God and the miracles of God; we should also love the truth of God. Mr. Bentley took to the stage and as he went to open the Bible, Rev. Flip cried out and called Mr. Bentley to repentance and the acknowledgment of the truth. One by one, the Scriptures rang out. Verses like Hebrews 13:4, which states, “Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.”

“And I have seen folly in the prophets of Samaria; they prophesied in Baal, and caused my people Israel to err. I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness; they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah.”

As several other verses were proclaimed, Mr. Bentley tried his best to ignore this loving, public rebuke, but it clearly shook this misguided church to its core. After we were all “escorted out,” the Oprah Winfrey and the documentary film crews interviewed many of the saints who called Mr. Bentley to genuine repentance. We all gave a Biblical and reasonable defense for our actions.

Our two main concerns were for his personal soul and the example this church was setting for the lambs of God being led astray by their declensions. The young people practically worship these men. In fact, we discovered evidence that three missionary couples were leaving the Lord’s work to come home and get divorced, citing Mr. Bentley's sin as the authority for their actions. Without a doubt, this grave error had to be confronted with the love and truth of God’s Word and in Jesus name, it was.

Day Three

The Abortion Mills and Abortionists Neighborhoods

We split our forces into three teams. One team went to Winston Salem to storm the gates of hell at a Planned Parenthood and to expose abortionist, Jimmy Isaac Newton, to his neighborhood. The second team set up at the Latrobe abortion mill and gave-em-heaven. Afterwards, they went to expose abortionist, Ron Vermanie, to his neighborhood. The last team was sent to the Hebron abortion mill. Though blocked by a big fence, men of God climbed a ladder and preached the Word of God to those contemplating the unspeakable against their own children. From there, this team proceeded to “doctor” Flood’s neighborhood and canvassed the area with a flyer exposing his hidden works of darkness. There was one divine appointment at this gate. We met a black pastor who is influential in calling black men back to their family and church responsibilities. He is now aware of who lives in his neighborhood. We also took time to share with him the significance of the abortion/racism connection chronicled by the new DVD, Maafa 21.

The afternoon was spent studying the Gospel of Matthew with its emphasis on the establishment of the Kingdom of Heaven and our responsibility to extend its influence in the earth. Dr. Pat McEwen followed and gave an outstanding presentation called “The Best Way to Protect Yourself from Breast Cancer.”

Day Four

The Church of Jesus Christ

On Sunday morning, the OR/OSA leaders went back to the gate of the Lord’s House. One again, “God went back to Church.” We set up signs and passed out powerful materials at Central Church of God, a large evangelical church with thousands attending. We called the Church’s attention to the fact that there are two abortion mills within a four mile radius of the Church. We reminded God’s people of their duty to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves, rescue those unjustly sentenced to death, and to defend the fatherless.

This is a great Evangelical Church that does many wonderful works to advance the cause of Christ. But as Jesus proclaimed to the religious system of His day, “for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone (Matthew 23:23).”

Nothing, however, could have possibly prepared us for the hardcore, vindictive reaction from this church. Throughout the years, we have done several “God is going back to Church” campaigns. Some were upset but remained civil, while others actually invited us in to address the church and came to the altars acknowledging their failure to be their brother’s keeper and loving their neighbor as themselves. The reply of Central Church of God, however, was off the charts as it relates to our plea for the least of these. In fact, they chose to ignore the veracity of our message by attacking the messengers to the point of arresting fellow Christians.

Contrary to the Word of God, this church had three Christian brothers incarcerated. 1 Corinthians 6:6-7 states:

“But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers. Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded?”

David Lackey and I were arrested for merely using their parking lot to turn our van around. At first, the police were willing to let us go when they learned what we were actually doing, but when the head security guard recognized me, he demanded the police arrest us.

Previously, this person and I had a short exchange. Though neither David nor I were personally warned not to enter the parking lot, I did hear this man command Pastor Mark Holick to move off the drive way. When Pastor Mark asked, “where do you want me to go?” The head security guard answered, “You can go out in the street for all I care.” When I heard this response, I challenged him, “Did I hear you correctly? Are you saying that you want fellow believers in Christ to go out into the street to be hit by a car?” He emphatically stated, “That is exactly what I mean.” This is from a church who accused us of having a “bad spirit.”

Both David and I had injured shoulders and a paramedic, who was a member of the church, asked the police to handcuff us in the front. Not only did they ignore this request on our behalf, but actually tightened the second handcuffs they used to haul us to jail. God in His mercy gave us the grace to handle the pain. Truly, out of all the arrests that we have personally experienced in the cause of Christ, this was by far the most unexpected. It was so ridiculous and unreasonable that all David and I could do was bow our head and declare, “Lord, Your will be done.” In fact, the paramedic who came to our aid stated, “This is so strange; it has to be the work of God.”

The church had our van towed and impounded – $179.00. Three of us were arrested and are now out of jail with a $200 bond, a $250 bond, and an $800 bond. We had to cancel and reschedule two flights out of Charlotte because of jail time. And we were just informed that we have been BANNED FROM CENTRAL CHURCH OF GOD FOR LIFE! What sin do you know of that would get one banned from church for life?

Don’t tell me, let me guess. The only sin that might get one banned from this church for life is the fact that he is truly for life. If you believe abortion is murder, and act like it, and tell others about it, you may well be banned from this church for life. This must be Central Church of God’s idea of the unpardonable sin – PLEASE!

God’s work and will was certainly fulfilled that day in jail, however. Our ministry simply shifted from the streets and was sent to the prison system. Many of the prisoners had not been to church for a long time, so God sent church to them. We witnessed God’s Word in every cell, prayed for one individual to follow Christ, and one man broke and wept openly before the other prisoners as the Holy Spirit touched his heart.

While David and I were ministering to the prisoners, another Christian brother, Edwin, who also was part of the outreach at the church, was thrown into jail. What was his crime? Before I tell you, keep in mind that this man has been attending this church off and on since he was a small boy.

They arrested him for not walking across the street at the crosswalk. The captain of the jail, who instinctively knew that there was something bizarre about our arrests, actually came into our cell to talk with us. When we asked him about Edwin’s arrest, he stated, “In thirty eight years of serving on the police force, I’ve never seen a ticket for this, let alone an arrest.”

Barring a lawyer helping us pro bono, we are scheduled to appear before the court on March 18th. Our charge is trespass. Please pray that God grants us an advocate and God’s truth will be revealed and His will be done through this trial. Please pray for our families and Brother Edwin and his fiancée, Kristin as well. They were both regular attendees of Central Church of God and both, pardon the pun, have been “banned for life” (their exact words) from their church. No charge and no trial, just never come back here again. Obviously, they are heart broken by the callous response from their church. Brethren, again, please pray for us!
